Mouth ulcers also known as canker sores, are quite common and irritating. They are small, painful, and white in color surrounded by an inflamed red border. They usually appear on the inside of the cheeks, lips, throat, under the tongue, and on the floor of the mouth.
There is no definite cause behind mouth ulcers but certain factors that cause sores to appear include smoking, acidic foods, excess acidity, constipation, hormonal changes, accidental cheek bites, dental work, hard brushing, immune system weakness such as cold and flu, diets low in vitamin B12, zinc, iron, or other nutrients.
Mouth ulcers aren’t contagious and usually go away within seven to ten days. However, if you get a large sore, it will take a longer time to heal and extremely painful.
Treatment for Mouth Ulcers

Honey is a very effective remedy for mouth ulcers due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It helps to soothe ulcers by retaining moisture and also possesses wound healing properties. It also reduces the swelling and irritation.
All you need to do is take some honey and simply dip a cotton swab in it and dab it on the ulcers. You can also use glycerin in the same way to get rid of this problem.
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is an excellent home remedy for mouth ulcers. It is especially helpful for those caused by acidic foods or drinks as baking soda helps neutralize acid and eases the pain. It will remove germs and bacteria and also reduce inflammation.
- Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with water to make a thin paste. Apply this on the affected area using your fingers. Repeat this several times a day.
- Alternatively, you can simply put baking soda directly on your mouth ulcer but be aware excess use of baking soda may cause a burning sensation.
Sea Salt and Hydrogen Peroxide
Both sea salt and hydrogen peroxide work wonders for canker sore as it contains antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and disinfectant properties. It also has a soothing effect that can help to heal the ulcer faster.
- Add two teaspoons each of sea salt and 3% hydrogen peroxide into a glass of warm water. Mix them well.
- Rinse your mouth with it or you can also gargle with it.
- Repeat twice or thrice a day.
Coconut milk is highly beneficial to treat ulcers naturally thanks to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties also help heal the pain and swelling.
- Add one teaspoon of coconut milk and a little honey into it. Mix it well.
- Apply this on the affected area. Follow this remedy three or four times a day.
- Alternatively, you can simply rinse your mouth with fresh coconut milk and leave it on.
Studies have shown that basil has anti-microbial, antifungal, and antiviral properties that help speed up the healing process for mouth ulcers. It helps prevent infections and cure bad breath.
- Wash a handful of basil leaves thoroughly.
- Simply chew them and sip a little water afterward.
- Follow this remedy twice a day, in the morning and evening.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a rich source of acetic acid. This acid helps to kill the bacteria causing the mouth ulcers and heal it.
- Mix the apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and swish this solution around in your mouth for about one and two minutes.
- Rinse your mouth with plain water.
Thanks to its antimicrobial properties help in killing the infections that cause ulcers.
- Crush the alum crystals to get a fine powder.
- Take a cotton swab, wet it, and dip it in the powder. Place it on the affected area.
- Hold it there for two or three minutes. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after removing the cotton swab.
Ice is an effective home remedy to reduce the pain of canker ulcers. It is particularly helpful when you apply ice on the affected area as soon as you experience symptoms, like a tingling and burning sensation, before the shallow ulceration appears.
Besides trying these natural home treatments, make sure you do not eat acidic or spicy foods. Also, use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth. If your mouth ulcer does not heal for a long time (3 weeks) and is extremely discomforting, affecting your daily routine, consult your doctor for treatment.
