Home Remedies for Baby Eczema

It is common not to want to over-medicate your child because parents understand the elegance of their baby’s skin and want to avoid as many steroid and petroleum-based products as possible. It’s natural for being a parent to seek chemical free home remedies for baby eczema that help your baby’s body to build a resistance to it.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is one of the most common skin problems in babies. It is an inflammatory, non-contagious skin problem, often making an appearance within a few months of birth. It is characterized by chronically dry, red, scaly, itchy and crusty patches on babies’ skin that often appears on the scalp, forehead, and face.

This problem is caused by both genetic and environmental factors which may include dust mites, exposure to allergens and infections.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the most effective remedies for eczema, whether for a child or an adult. It is rich in antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal properties that not only lower the risk of infections but also prevent your child’s skin from drying out. It is considered a natural moisturizer that helps soothe the skin.

Just apply the coconut oil on your baby’s affected skin and gently massage it in circles for a few seconds. Apply it several times a day to get relief from itching.

Oatmeal Bath

Oatmeal baths are a good remedy for children suffering from eczema. It is hugely beneficial for the skin as it contains anti-inflammatory properties that help to removes itching, soothe the skin and provide instant relief.

Add one cup of fine oatmeal powder to a bathtub filled with lukewarm water. Mix till it has a silky texture. Soak your child in this water for at least 15-20 minutes in the water and then rinse them off. Use this remedy once a day.

Sunflower Seed Oil

Another effective remedy that can help to treat eczema is Sunflower oil as it improves the barrier function of the skin.  It prevents the babies’ skin from dryness. Plus, it is safe to use as massage oil for babies.

Apply this oil on your baby’s entire body at least once daily; massage it clockwise and anti-clockwise for a few minutes.

Sea Salt Baths

Sea salt is extremely good for the skin in general due to the minerals present in salt. It can help avoid infections as it has anti-bacterial properties. It also reduces the itchiness and soothes the skin.

To prepare this bath simply add sea salt to warm water. Mix until the salt dissolves and soak your baby in it for 15 minutes. Use this remedy once a day.

Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil is another remedy for baby eczema. It is rich in fatty acids that are necessary for normal skin barrier and function.

The typical dosage of evening primrose oil when it is used for alleviating eczema is about 200- 400 mg daily. Results may be seen in 4 to 8 weeks.


Chamomile is an old, natural remedy is great for soothing inflamed skin. Chamomile helps to soothe your baby’s skin, relieving the inflammation, dryness, and itchiness of eczema due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Simply mix 5-10 drops of chamomile oil or some dried chamomile flowers in the baby’s bathwater filled with lukewarm water. Use this remedy once a day.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is extremely healthy for the skin; it has anti-bacterial properties that can help prevent infection due to eczema. It also has skin hydrating and healing properties that reduces dryness and soothe the skin.Using 3-4 drops of tea tree oil mixed with any moisturizer can help combat eczema.

Note: Pure tea tree oil for babies might be extremely harsh to their skin so dilute it with some lukewarm water.
